As the manager of the national lab onboard the International Space Station (ISS), the ISS U.S. National Laboratory has been providing nontraditional users with access to this one-of-a-kind platform for discovery science and technology development focused on utilizing space environment to benefit life on Earth. At the forefront of an emerging economy in low Earth orbit and beyond, the ISS National Lab is expanding demand for space-based research and development (R&D) by nontraditional users from a wide variety of sectors (for example, P&G, Target Corporation, large pharmaceutical companies, Apple, etc.). How does one evaluate the success as well as the short-term and long-term value of projects using novel platforms in yielding economic, scientific, and social benefits to humanity and a return on investment? Customers’ shopping needs continue to evolve, and in response, companies are offering innovative commerce models and shopping experiences. 20 years ago, customers had to visit local stores to buy goods - then the internet created Amazon. Now we get items delivered to our door within 2 hours with just several clicks on our smart phone. We may need to reconsider the definition of retail when voice, AR/VR and AI/ML are going to create next gen shopping experiences completely different from how we shop today. How should companies think about their boundaries in the face of rapid innovation? How can they harness innovation to stay relevant even as their industries shift?
